Extensions and Redesigns - Stanhope Road, Bowdon

STANHOPE ROAD Extension

The owners of this recently built property asked us to come up with a solution for the lean-to conservatory which was not fit for purpose. The usual problems of freezing in winter and boiling in summer were exacerbated by the internal spaces being too small to function as any form of accommodation for this family of four. They also wanted to add a good-sized garden room as well as a dining table to seat 6 to 8 people.

We suggested they extend out with a modern form of conservatory, one with glass walls but partial roof lights to control the seasonal temperature extremes. The extension is south facing so a severe overhang was introduced to reduce solar glare and gain through the 2865mm high glass doors. This new space was designed to create a multi-functioning area split up into a kitchen, a dining area, a garden room and a snug.

These four distinct areas needed to have their own dynamics such as the snug to feel cosy and have shaded views of the television, the garden room to have good views over the garden, the dining area to have a similar aspect and be connected to the kitchen. Finally, for the kitchen to function out of the circulation route but to have a visual connection with the garden and the other three zones. The solution to this was to install a central log burner that served three of the areas.

Designed to swivel, this could face the snug, garden room or dining area. The stove also partially disguised the central pillar that replaced the masonry wall that broke up the views and light entering the rooms. The central position of this feature fire splits these four areas up whilst serving them all. It allows each to benefit from its heating and focal function whilst defining the spaces.
